Marie Digby is clueless why Filipinos like her

Marie Digby recently released her first albumin the Philippines, Your Love, which includes tracks that feature her collaboration with Filipino singer-actors like Sam Milby and Jericho Rosales. Though Marie has made a name for herself in the international music scene, she said that making an album in the country is also her way of thanking her Filipinos fans who are a big part of her international fame.

“In the beginning when my YouTube videos were taking off, most of my fans were in the Philippines and when I went to Hollywood records it was very hard to convince them to let me come over here and do concerts for promotional work,” she related. “In fact, the first time around I went almost everywhere except for the Philippines so when I finished my contract (in the US) and I made sure that I come over here and thank everybody who would watch my videos for the past four years because without the fans here, I wouldn’t have a released album anywhere.”

The Irish-Japanese singer also could not single out the reason why she thinks Filipinos appreciate her music. “It baffles me and I’m grateful for it because like in the beginning when I found out that most of my viewers were Filipinos [I wondered], is it because they just liked me or they think I am Filipino? I wonder what it is. I don’t know what the answer [and] I don’t care, I’m just grateful,” she beamed.

Having the chance to stay and know a lot of locals in the country, Marie added that what she really likes most about Filipinos is that they are not trivial. “What I appreciate, they don’t love you on the surface, they dig deeper, they want to know who you are, what your inspirations are.”

She even shared a characteristic of Filipinos that she finds interesting. “Filipinos love music and they love to sing, but sometimes when you have your shows, they get really, really shy. They’ve been singing along the whole show but when you put the mic on them they’re mute,” she said smiling.

Apart from her album in the Philippines, Marie continued that she is also working on her album in Japan, which she intends to release next year, and also hopes to release an album in the US via an independent record label.

Marie Digby says James is a friend

American YouTube sensation Marie Digby signed a contract today with Star Records to record her album with all-original songs.

The singer-songwriter, who has been linked to Sam Milby, has been in the country for 3 months. She says she has fallen in love with the Philippines.

Digby says no romance blossomed between her and Sam. They are friends now and may work together in her upcoming album.

Marie also clarifies rumors that she and James Yap are dating.

Marie says she met Kris Aquino's ex through a common friend. They have been out with a group of friends a couple of times, but they have never gone out on a date. She and James are just friends, she adds.

Marie believes the rumors spread after people noticed their interactions on Facebook.

When asked to describe James, she says he is a very nice and sweet guy.

When asked if James has a chance with her, Marie didn't give a definite answer. However, she says that at 28, she is looking to be in a relationship.

When asked who is better looking between Sam and James, Marie says "they are both gwapo (handsome)."

Marie Digby is the Newest 'ASAP' Member

International acoustic singer Marie Digby is joining the local music scene.

Digby, who was linked to hunk actor-singer Sam Milby, is the newest member of musical variety show “ASAP Rocks.” She will also do a recording under ABS-CBN Star Records.

In her interview with ABS-CBN News, Digby disclosed that she would love to do a duet with KC Concepcion and Milby.

Digby is also open to doing hosting job, citing her experience as an emcee of beauty pageant Miss Earth 2010 in Vietnam. She, however, said that her top priority is her music.

As for acting, she said: “I don’t know if I can act.”

Digby on Wednesday night performed during the welcome reception held for the 40 Binibining Pilipinas candidates. The event was attended by ABS-CBN bosses led by chairman and chief executive officer Eugenio Lopez III and president Charo Santos-Concio.

When asked about her impression of the candidates, Digby said: “The girls are lovely. They’re not only beautiful but they have so much personality and I’ve gotten the chance to speak with some of them. And I think this year, it would be tough to pick a winner.”

Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc. president Stella Marquez-Araneta, designer Pitoy Moreno and beauty queens Miriam Quiambao, Venus Raj and Krista Kleiner were also present during the welcome reception.

The coronation night of Binibining Pilipinas 2011 will be held on April 10 at the Araneta Coliseum, and it will be aired live on ABS-CBN.

Japan aid

From Japan, Digby is moving here to grab the opportunity "to work and then give back" to the quake and tsunami-hit country. Although she is miles away from Japan, the singer, who became popular on YouTube via her own version of Rihanna’s “Umbrella,” vowed to help through her music.

“My goal in coming here in Manila is not just to make music and meet my friends, it’s about what I can do to help Japan,” she said.

Her parents are also coming here from Tokyo to “visit me and make sure I’m okay and I’m settled. And also they want to get out of Japan as well.”

“I’ll be honest I’m concerned about my friends and family in Japan because they’re scared of radiation and nuclear plant. My parents are still in Japan so they’ll be coming here in Manila,” she added.

Digby and her mom were inside an elevator when a 9-magnitude earthquake struck Japan. She said they were lucky to be in a secure building when it happened.

Marie Digby, Sobrang Natakot sa Naranasang Lindol sa Japan

Baon ng Japanese-Irish-American musician na si Marie Digby ang kuwento ng naranasang lindol nung siya'y nasa Japan.

"I honestly have goosebumps thinking about it because I was in an elevator with my mom when the earthquake began," aniya.

Matindi ring takot ang naramdaman ng singer para sa pamilya.

"It's kinda like panic and at the same time, you're on survival mode. It's like a feeling I've never had before. I'm just grateful that I'm unharmed," ani Marie.

Sa oras ng panganib, agad siyang kinamusta ng nai-link sa kanyang si Sam Milby.

"Sam was one of the people who reached out to make sure I was okay," pag-amin niya.

Inamin din ni Marie na isa si Sam sa mga nagkumbinsi sa kanyang gumawa ng proyekto sa bansa.

Wala raw duda na may malaking puwang sa puso ni Marie ang mga Pinoy.

"I wish I had Filipino blood. I kinda feel like a little bit I do," hirit ni Marie.
